چکیده

Constructing a semantic concept hierarchy covers only part of the problem in building any knowledgebased natural language processing (NLP) system: Language understanding requires mapping from syntactic structures into conceptual (i.e. interlingua) representation (henceforth verb-argument mapping), while language generation requires the inverse mapping. Jacobs [13] proposed a solution in which he augmented his concept hierarchy in the knowledge base with verb-argument mapping information. While his solution works for monolingual understanding/generation, associating each semantic concept of a verb with English specific mapping information in the knowledge base is not ideal for an interlinguabased NLP system, since verb-argument mapping varies greatly among languages. In this paper, we discuss how the lexicon of our interlingua-based NLP system 1 abstracts the language-dependent portion of predicate-argument mapping information from the core meaning of verb senses (i.e. semantic concepts as defined in the knowledge base). We also show how we represent this mapping information in terms of cross-linguistically generalized mapping types called situation types and word sense-specific idiosyncrasies. This three-level representation enables us to keep the languageindependent knowledge base intact and make efficient use of lexical data by inheritance. We take advantage of large multilingual corpora to automatically acquire languageand domain-specific lexical information. In addition, this representation framework easily deals with some of the MT divergences which

Acquiring Predicate-Argument Mapping Information From Multilingual Texts

This paper discusses automatic acquisition of predicate-argument mapping information from multilingual texts. The lexicon of our NLP system abstracts the language-dependent portion of predicate-argument mapping information from the core meaning of verb senses (i.e. semantic concepts as defined in the knowledge base). We represent this mapping information in terms of cross-linguistically general...

AnCora-Net: Integración multilingüe de recursos lingüísticos semánticos

AnCora-Net is a multilingual verbal lexicon built from the mapping of the Catalan and Spanish AnCora-Verb verbal lexicons into the English Unified Verb Index. The Unified Verb Index combines different sources of knowledge for English of wide coverage, which are a referent in semantic representation. The integration of our resources to the Unified Verb Index will enrich the contents of AnCora-Ve...

Multilingual lexicons for related languages

The great increase in work on the lexicon by computational and theoretical linguists throughout the s has concerned itself almost exclusively with monolingual lexicons Meanwhile applied work on multilingual lexicons mostly for machine translation MT has employed monolingual lexicons linked only at the level of semantics In this paper we argue that the traditional MT lexicon architecture while a...

The Scope and the Sources of Variation in Verbal Predicates in English and French

In this article, we examine the variation of the predicate-argument structure between English and French in an experimental and data-driven approach. We annotate a corpus of 1000 French sentences with predicate-argument structure using a framework originally developed for English. We identify a number of non-matching predicates and examine them in a qualitative analysis. We show that these two ...

Mapping Czech and English Valency Lexicons: Preliminary Report

We describe here a very first attempt to connect two valency lexicons: Pattern Dictionary of English Verbs (PDEV) and VerbaLex. Both lexicons contain verbs together with their syntactic structure (arguments of the verbal predicate) and semantic restrictions (semantic types typical for a given verb argument). The lexicons are similar in overall but differ in details since their formalisms are ta...
